In 2008, she made it to the semi-finals of The X Factor (2004) before being voted off the show.
Although she did not win The X Factor (2004) in 2008, she did however win the most votes on the sixth week of the live shows gaining 31.30% of all votes cast that evening.
On week five of The X Factor (2004) live shows, she was excused from performing due to a severe case of laryngitis. She was planning to sing Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby” until her doctor strongly advised her not to sing at all as it could cause permanent damage to her vocal chords. She returned to performing the following week singing Coldplay’s “Yellow” and she subsequently received the most votes cast that evening.
She was in a relationship with fellow The X Factor (2004) contestant Eoghan Quigg for a brief time during the series.
During production of “Songs from the Tainted Cherry Tree”, she worked with Nerina Pallot, Ellie Goulding, Guy Sigsworth, Chris Braide, Alexis Strum, Patrick Wolf, Devonte Hynes Savan Kotecha, Starsmith and Cass Lowe.
In April 2010, she released her debut single, “Once”, followed by her debut album, “Songs from the Tainted Cherry Tree” in May 2010.
In 2009, she signed a record deal with RCA Records.
In 2009, she won the title role in the West End revival of Jim Cartwright’s “The Rise and Fall of Little Voice”. In 2010, the theatre going public voted her the winner of the “London Newcomer of the Year” award at the Theatregoers’ Choice Awards. In her acceptance speech, she said that she was “really nervous and had not won anything before” adding that “it is tough in the theatre world”.
